MUHANGA – A farmers’ cooperative, Abahinzi ba Cyeza, has started the construction of a cassava processing plant in Muhanga district.
Vital Nyakayiru the cooperative chairman made the revelation during the closure of two-day training on project management held at the women’s development center (CEPAF).
The training that was sponsored by the National Electoral Commission (NEC), aimed at empowering the members with development strategies.
Nyakayiru revealed that the Rural Sector Support Project (RSSP) offered Rwf80million toward the first phase of the construction.
“The plant will process quality cassava flour for export and the proceeds will be beneficial to the members in terms of increased savings and rural development,” he said.
In order to sustain the processing plant, the cooperative has committed to increase modern cassava production. So far 350 hectares of cassava have been planted in Cyeza sector, out of the projected total of 2000 hectares in the whole district.
The head of Civic Education in NEC, Protais Rumanzi, encouraged the members to work towards development.
He said, “Empowering residents is vital in order to participate in national growth and become responsible citizens.”
