GAKENKE - Over 50 women drawn from all the sectors of Gakenke district have completed a one week entrepreneurship skills training to enable them start income generating projects.
During the training, organised by the National Women’s Council-NWC in the district and funded by the Belgian Technical Cooperation, participants were briefed on savings and management of micro-projects.
The training also provided a platform for participants to discuss ways of tackling gender violence while coming up with new initiatives for women for the purposes of empowering them.
The coordinator of NWC , Theresa Nyirangwabije, challenged the rural women to be more competitive especially in formulating income generating projects. During the training it was disclosed that women associations in Gakenke have set up a program called ‘Umwiherero’ which seeks to offer counselling services to married couples on equal terms in their families.
Stepheni Mukarugema, the women’s coordinator in Kalambo sector, said that the training would promote the solidarity among women as well as build their capacity in running their businesses.
