NGOMA – Travellers on Lake Mugesera in Ngoma district have started to enjoy a smoother and faster ride along the lake following the addition of engines boats by Niyezere Cooperative.

The new boats have helped to improve transport from Kagashi to Mabare and Byinza, according to Ladislas Bugingo, the chairman of the cooperative.

“The engine boats are very fast, so many people have been attracted and our business is actually doing well,” he said.

“We actually intend to buy a bigger vessel in a few months to come.”

François Munyemana, a member of the cooperative and an operator of one of the boats, said they charge passengers Rwf300 to any destination.

“In most cases the canoes are hired for a month at a negotiable fee of not less than Rwf50,000,” Munyemana said.

Niyizere Water Transport Cooperative started in 2005 and currently has 100 members.
