2009 Fiba-Africa Club Championships
Venue - Kigali
Dates - Dec 13-22
TWO Angolan sides Petro Atletico basketball club and defending champion of the FIBA Africa Club Championships Primeiro de Agosto will renew their rivalry when the 24th edition of Africa’s most prestigious club competition throws off this Sunday at Amahoro Indoor Stadium.
The two teams have dominated African basketball since the tournament was made annual in 2002.
In 2006, the rivalry saw Petro snatching the title at the expense of their Luanda rivals with both sides enjoying the presence of top quality players who have also dominated the Fiba-Afrobasket championships.
However, in 2007, it was the turn of Agosto to take the title on home soil and the club repeated the feat in 2008 in Tunisia although the last victory was without their arch rival, Petro who could not make it to the final round from the FIBA Africa Zone-IV qualifiers.
Boasting of top quality players in their ranks like Carlos Morais and Eduardo Mingas, the Angolans should comfortably progress past the Group A which also has Nigeria’s Kano Pillars, ASA of Angola, ASB Mazembe of DRC and hosts APR.
Leading the challenge in group-B is Primeiro de Agosto, Warriors of Uganda, ASPAC of Benin Republic, Cooperative Bank of Kenya and Interclub of Congo Brazzaville.
Action starts on Sunday through to December 22.
