Residents and passersby in Remera were left in shock on Monday evening when a police officer shot at a motorist who had accidentally knocked his motorcycle.
The incident happened at around 4 pm in the evening at the Chez Lando junction during the evening rush hour.
According to the eye witnesses who were at the scene when the incident happened, the unidentified driver of a dark Toyota Carina was driving slowly and accidentally knocked the motorcycle on which on Sgt. Bernard Ngamije was riding.
The enraged Ngamije immediately pulled out his pistol and shot the tires of the car.
The scared driver got out of the car and run for his life and sought refuge in one of the nearby banks.
Traffic police officers at the Kiseminti Junction swung into action and tried to tame the furious sergeant.
The traffic officers are then said to have tried to let Ngamije get away with the incident but bystanders who rushed to the scene objected and insisted that he be arrested. He was ordered to surrender his gun and was whisked away in a police pickup.
When contacted yesterday, police spokesman Eric Kayiranga confirmed the incident and said that they would follow normal judicial procedures and bring the culprit to book.
“The law will take its course since the offence he committed of ‘attempted murder’ is punished in the Penal Code,” said Kayiranga.
