FACT intensifies anti-GBV campaign in Karongi

KARONGI – Residents of Bwishyura Sector in Karongi district over the weekend held a peaceful march to add their voices to the anti- gender based violence (GBV) campaign. A series of other activities including music, dance and drama were conducted by the local residents through an NGO, the Forum for Activities to fight Torture and Violence (FACT) Rwanda.

KARONGI – Residents of Bwishyura Sector in Karongi district over the weekend held a peaceful march to add their voices to the anti- gender based violence (GBV) campaign.

A series of other activities including music, dance and drama were conducted by the local residents through an NGO, the Forum for Activities to fight Torture and Violence (FACT) Rwanda.

According to Caleb Ninsiima, the legal adviser of FACT Rwanda, over 30 cases of domestic violence have been reported in the last 3 months in Karongi.

“This rate is alarming and that is the reason we carry out such activities mainly aimed at creating maximum awareness among the local population,” Ninsiima said.

He urged the citizens to always report such cases since it is the only way it can be contained.

Saiba Gashanana, the sector Executive Secretary also appealed to the concerned authorities mostly parents to identify and avoid concealing GBV incidences.

“To educate people about their rights is paramount and you should all seek help from the nearest local authorities,” Gashanana said.
