RUBAVU – The swine flu which had hit Gisenyi prison last month has been contained, authorities have said.
Over sixty prisoners were put in quarantine after 15 inmates were confirmed to have contracted the H1N1 influenza.
The disease affected the work of Gacaca and other courts because suspects could not appear for trial. But no deaths were reported.
“The situation is stable now, since the beginning of this week. No new cases have been reported in the prison.
Justice Institutions are operating normally,” Pierre Celestin Twagirayezu, the Rubavu mayor told this paper.
Jacqueline Bakunduseruye, the vice mayor in charge of social affairs said, “Doctors who carried out tests declared the prison swine flu free,”
She noted that the outbreak was delaying the operation of Gacaca courts in a way.
