KIGALI - THEONESTE Mutsindashyaka, the former State Minister of Primary and Secondary Education has been arrested for embezzlement of state resources and under-declaration of his assets before the Office of the Ombudsman, a senior official told The New Times late Tuesday.
Mutsindashyaka was arrested at around 9 pm and spent the night at Kicukiro police station.
“It is true that we arrested him this evening and he’s being detained at Kicukiro police station,” Emmanuel Gasana, Commissioner General of Police told The New Times.
The former Minister has been battling different court cases all to do with mismanagement of state resources.
He has been appearing in a case involving former top officials of Eastern province accused of wrongfully awarding a tender worth Rwf 1.7 billion for the construction of provincial headquarters. He was a former governor of this province.
Deputy Prosecutor General Alphonse Hitiyaremye told The New Times that Mutsindashyaka also faces charges of continuously failing to declare all assets he owns to the Ombudsman’s office.
“We have been investigating him and one of the cases he faces is under-declaration of his assets which is punishable by law,” Hitiyaremye told The New Times.
“We will be providing more details tomorrow,” he said.
Mutsindashyaka was dropped from cabinet recently for possible abuse of office.
