KARONGI - An Appeals Gacaca Court sitting in Kibirizi sector in Karongi District, yesterday handed four prominent Genocide perpetrators jail terms over crimes committed in Bisesero and Karongi hills.
Damien Nzaramba and Emmanuel Ndaruhutse were handed 30 and 19 years respectively, while Samuel Uwineza and Etienne Baragwiza were each given 15 years for their role in the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.
Court found all the accused guilty of participating in killings and stealing cows and other property in the two areas where over 80,000 Tutsi perished.
Nzaramba was individually found guilty of spearheading massacres in a catholic church where innocent victims had sought refuge.
Domina Mukakabera, the presiding judge, read the ruling amid widespread grief from survivors some of whose relatives perished at the hands of the four individuals who were accused jointly.
“These people even deserved a heavier sentence because it does not match with the atrocities they committed,” Dorothy Mukagasana, said amid tears.
