Why ignoring hypertension is like playing Russian Roulette

Russian Roulette is a stunt in which you spin the cylinder of a revolver that is loaded with only one bullet and then point the muzzle at your head and pull the trigger. If the bullet had spun to the firing chamber, your brain would be blown off. It is a deadly game.

Before you ignore blood pressure because symptoms will alert you to the problem, think about it like you are playing Russian Roulette; you are taking a deadly chance with your life.

It is not a guarantee that signs will always occur but when you see signs like nervousness, sweating, difficult or facial flushing then quickly visit a doctor because high blood pressure has largely symptomless.

High blood pressure is athe force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. If the force of the blood flow is often high, the tissue that makes up the walls of arteries gets stretched beyond its healthy limit. This creates problems in several ways. In order to be health, blood pressure must be consistently in the normal range.

Doctor’s view

According to Dr Joseph Mucumbitsi, the chairperson of Rwanda Heart Foundation (RHF), records indicate that most people seek medical treatment for blood pressure at a late stage.

He says most people never even check their blood pressure levels and live with pending strokes which could have been controlled if detected.

To prevent high blood pressure, one ought to consume a diet that has fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products, while reducing total and saturated fat intake.

You should also keep an eye on your waistline and weight, blood pressure often increases as weight increases. The more weight you lose, the lower your blood pressure. Losing weight also makes any blood pressure medications you're taking more effective.

Carrying too much weight can put you at greater risk of high blood pressure. In general you have to make a lot of exercise and avoid eating too much oil, the foods you eat has to be rich in potassium, fibre or both possibly helping  to lower the blood pressure.

High blood pressure can lead to other diseases like coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure and other health problems.

It is important to maintain a healthy life style and follow the doctor’s orders on any treatment plans and also to stop taking alcohol.

The trick behind the health food is to eat less salt, fats, sugar and watch your weight so that it matches your height, eating nuts, berries and any other seeds or legumes and peas on daily basis.

However, exercise is needed but cautions against highly intense exercise as it can cause a heart attack.
