Red Rocks unveils Village Christmas Market

Christmas is upon us, and for those looking for something different, the Red Rocks Campsite and Guesthouse in Musanze is a good bet. This festive season, the campsite, which also doubles as a cultural exchange centre has organised a Christmas and holiday-makers event code-named “Village Christmas Market.”The market, which was launched on November 28, 2013, will run till Christmas Eve, December 24. The Village Christmas Market will showcase various aspects of local culture, including but not limited to; local food, art and crafts, traditional dances, story-telling and live painting/music performances. Different artisans and craftsmen from the Musanze area, both individuals and co-operatives have their stalls and craft shops erected at the campsite, while on-site live painting; weaving and basket-making sessions are part of the activities making for the interactive sessions.The Village Christmas Market runs every day from 12:00pm-8:00pm, and is made up of about 30 stalls in total.Greg Bakunzi, the proprietor of Red Rocks Campsite says, “We are trying to see how we can successfully merge community conservation and sustainable tourism. This is yet another way of empowering the crafts people and artisans in the local community, through opening networking links and selling their wares directly to buyers.”Red Rocks is located in Nyakinama village, 7 km outside of Musanze town in the Northern Province.
