Green Hills Academy are the winners of this year’s inter-school debating competitions organised by Rwanda Inspiration Back Up Ltd for the National Young Entrepreneur’s Debate Championships in Kigali.

Lycee Notre Dame de Citeaux (LNDC) emerged second, GS APE Rugunga third and Kagarama Secondary School came in fourth.

The debate was held under the theme: “This house believes that Technical Vocation Education can be a platform for the development of the private sector.”

The debating competitions aim at equipping students with debating skills while at the same time giving them an opportunity to contribute ideas towards building the country.

Lycee Notre Dame Des Citeaux (LNDC) was on the proposers’ side while Green Hills Academy was opposing the motion.

After winning the competitions, Green Hills Academy will represent Kigali in the national debate competition on September 28.

Sandra Teta, the deputy director of Rwanda Inspiration Back Up Ltd, said there is a great improvement in debating skills among students and they are happy with the competitions.

“The debates prove that students are informed about government policies like self-employment, and we hope these debates are not only helping them to improve debating skills but also boost their knowledge in various fields,” she said.

Like other provinces, the City of Kigali will be represented by six schools at national level. These include Green Hills, LNDC, GS APE Rugunga, Kagarama Secondary School, King David Academy and Lycee de Kigali.

The National Young Entrepreneur’s Debate Championships 2013 is organised in conjunction with the Ministry of Youth and ICT, Imbuto Foundation, the Ministry of Education, the Rwanda Development Board and the Rwanda Governance Board.

On Saturday, there will be another debate competition for the higher institutions of learning at the Kigali Institute of Science and Technology.
