Audi reveals Sport Quattro concept

At the 2010 Paris Motor Show Audi unveiled its first Quattro Concept, a homage to the original 1984 Sport Quattro. That concept looked incredible and was powered by a 2.5-liter five-cylinder that produced around 380 horsepower. And now Audi has unveiled its successor and hopeful prelude to a production version, the Sport Quattro Concept. While it may closely resemble the 2010 Concept, there is one major difference: the latter is a hybrid. Now, don’t think for a moment that Audi would go all Prius on us. No, the Sport Quattro, which will debut at Frankfurt next week, is a plug-in hybrid that’s got a total of 700 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. That output comes courtesy of a 4.0-liter turbo V8 and an electric motor that gets its juice from a lithium-ion battery. Power is sent to all four wheels (of course) via an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission. Audi claims the Sport Quattro will blast from 0-62 mph in just 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 190 mph. The numbers are excellent up until this point: the coupe weighs a hefty 4,07 pounds. You can blame that on the battery pack.Styling wise, the concept looks solid, especially with those big wheels, short overhangs and the nicely angled rear hatch. It actually looks pretty darn close to what a production version could look like, and it even comfortably fits four occupants. Sounds to us like Audi has every intention to green light this for production, but we’ll have to wait and see how you, the readers and the rest of the public, respond in the days and weeks ahead.
