Youth representatives in Kigali should be at the forefront of preventing drug consumption through school-based forums, social media and other available platforms The advice was given by Senior Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali youth representatives in a meeting organized by the City of Kigali in partnership with the National Youth Council. Hitayezu explained that the earlier a person start using drugs, the greater the likelihood of developing dependence. “Young people who persistently abuse substances often experience an array of problems, including academic difficulties, health-related problems (including mental health), poor peer relationships, and involvement in crimes. Additionally, there are consequences because as they become unproductive they are likely to be a burden to family members, the community, and the entire society,” he argued. According to Police, commonly used drugs in the city of Kigali include glue (mostly among street children) illicit brew and imported drugs like cocaine, cannabis, heroine known also as mugo and khat. According to police figures, 4,149 people were arrested in drug related crimes last year, with over 71 per cent of them aged between 18 and 35 years. At least 48 drug dealers who were arrested last year were aged below 18 years, according to the report. In the last five years, Police recorded 18,383 cases related to narcotic drugs. On the other hand, Parfait Busabizwa, the vice mayor of Economic Development Affairs said it was a disappointment to see that the majority of those admitted in rehabilitation centers were school dropouts or in the age group of those supposed to be in school or part of the labor force. “Having the ability to reach more places and meet with a diverse category of peers, we want these youth representatives to be influencers of positive attitudes in other youths in the community by helping those who are affected to quit and also prevent more youth from getting involved,” he said Cindy Hortense Niwemfura, Girls leaders Forum Coordinator said although she already knew that drug abuse is a big issue in society , the increasing numbers of youth abusing drugs compelled her to include more awareness about drugs in youth activities . Medical experts position drug abuse as the cause for some prevailing cases of heart, liver, kidney and mental illnesses. Between 2010 and 2015, the neuro-psychiatric hospital of Ndera received 1,432 patients with mental illness caused by use of drugs, according to statistics from Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC).
