The National Police have issued countrywide warning to all mobile phone users to be aware of text messages that may come on their phones requesting them to send airtime and win prizes.

The warning comes after a number of people approached the police yesterday with complaints of how they have been conned.

According to the police spokesman John Uwamungu, the sender of the messages uses different Kenyan numbers that start with +254.

“The messages normally indicates that the there is a promotion aimed at awarding mobile phone owner with free airtime.

It requests the phone owner to send back as much airtime as possible to win the airtime,” said Uwamungu.

He added that several top officials in Rwanda have received such messages.

“We are trying to track the conmen and we are calling on everybody to be conscious about such messages and notify the police in case that message comes to your phone,” said Uwamungu.

It’s the first time Rwanda is being part of this racket.
