Editor,

I just want to bring garbage collection inconsistencies to your attention. As of now I am stuck with a whole months waste in my compound because the person I have paid to empty my bin has not shown up.

I live in a rented house and do not have the luxury of digging up a pit to dispose off the waste. I think this situation is a health hazard to me and my family. My landlord says that it’s not her problem and I should take it up with the local council.

I know that my case is not isolated as it was also a problem in the previous estate that I lived in.

I don’t know if KCC has any system in place to coordinate waste disposal. If they don’t then they should establish one and if they have one it’s about time they made it functional for everyone.

Despite the many good programs KCC is running I think it’s important that they start coordinating garbage collection across the city.

Kacyiru estate is especially in need of organised garbage collection strategy following the garbage mess that we are stuck with now.

We have traditionally organised with private entities for the collection but they are failing us terribly.

I have hired severally people and despite the high fees they are not consistent and end up collecting my rubbish only once a month.

The prices that these private people ask for are extremely high and should be coordinated by the Council. Again I think its time KCC took complete charge of collection by tendering garbage collection services to willing qualified people in the country.

There should be a centralised system that is followed in all estates to manage wastes including sewage systems.
KCC, since you are the people charged with the welfare of the city, you should manage things better than you are presently.

I would also like to suggest placement of sanitary bins in all public toilets as that’s not in place yet.

Cleanliness needs to start from our homes and this will only be ensured if the citizens are given wasted disposal options.

I appeal to the councils to also make sure that private companies don’t exploit people when it comes to collection of garbage by establishing laws that ensure cheap environmental friendly waste disposal systems.
