Felecite Rwemalika, the head of women’s football in the Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa), has said that the national women’s football team (She Amavubi) have the potential to beat Kenya in the preliminary round qualifiers for the 2014 Africa Women’s Championships.

The first-leg match against Kenya is scheduled for February 16 at Stade de Kigali, Nyamirambo while the second leg will be played seven days later in Nairobi. The continental meet will be hosted by Namibia from October 15 to 25.

The winner after the two legs will proceed to the next round to play the winner of the Nigeria/Sierra Leone fixture.

“This is a promising step that gender equality has reached very far in Rwanda, which has seen the national women’s football team being revived on the international scene,” Rwemalika told Sunday Sport yesterday.

When asked about how confident they are that the team can eliminate their Kenyan counterparts and progress to the next round, she said, “You can see it on the training ground that the players are determined to do well at the biggest stage. So personally, I am confident we will eliminate Kenya.”

She also added that Rwandan players know the Kenyans through the East Africa post primary games (FEASSA) and they are not superior to the Rwandans.

Coach Marie Grace Nyinawumuntu’s team take on Kicukiro-based U17 Dream team (boys) in a warm-up match this morning at Amahoro national stadium, starting at 9am.
