The Minister of the Internal Security, Sheikh Musa Fazil Harerimana, was on Thursday elected the Spokesperson of the Forum for Political Parties in Rwanda (FPPR). This is the biggest position at the platform that brings together all political organisations operating in the country.
Harerimana, who is also the president of the Ideal Democratic Party (PDI), scooped 33 out of 34 votes to replace Liberal Party (PL)’s Protais Mitali who has held the position since October last year.
Upon his election, he hailed his predecessors for the progress registered by the forum so far, and expressed optimism for more accomplishments during his six months non-renewable tenure.
“The foundation is already strong, we only aim at facilitation that needs also a strong and permanent consultation among political parties,” he said in his acceptance speech, noting that the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF), the ruling party, has been the core advocate of good governance.
A law graduate, Harerimana has held several offices among them; the vice presidency of the National Electoral Commission, Prefect of Cyangugu and Governor of Western Province before he ascended to cabinet.
Apart from carrying on with the capacity building process in all parties, the new Spokesperson promised to work closely with other organs of government to achieve the forum’s set goals.
Harerimana will be assisted by Senator Agnes Mukabaranga of PDC who was also voted in Thursday, while Anicet Kayigema retained his post as the Executice Secretary of the Forum, as the same to the five-member disciplinary commission.
