Rwanda moved closer to qualifying for the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championships after defeating Nigeria 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 21-25, 25-17) on day four of the qualifying tournament Pool T on Sunday in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
The FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship will to be held from August 30 to September 21 in Poland.
Paul Bitok’s team finished their matches with a win-loss ratio of 3-1, leading the five-nation tournament with 9 points, while Nigeria dropped to 1-2 with 3 points.
However Rwanda will have to wait for the outcome of the Pool’s last matches between Cameroon and Gabon, and Algeria against Nigeria which were due to be played last evening.
To achieve the historic qualification, Bitok’s team needs Cameroon to win their match against Gabon 3-2 and Algeria to do the same against Nigeria. On Friday, Rwanda surprised host Cameroon 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 25-17) on the second day of the tournament.
It was Rwanda’s first victory in the tournament after losing to Algeria 3-0 on the opening day and they also cruised past Gabon 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 24-26, 25-17) on Saturday.
