Police in Kamonyi District have arrested a woman for allegedly killing her own baby.
The 33-year-old woman (name withheld), is a resident of Runda cell in Ruyenzi Sector. She is suspected to have strangled her new-born on Sunday, and dumped it in a swamp along the Nyabarongo river bank.
She told Police that she thought she had had a still birth and decided to dump the foetus into the swamp.
Three children, three men
Police retrieved the body from the swamp following a tip-off from the suspect’s sister, who saw her heading to the river bank carrying a bag. It was taken to Rukoma Hospital for post-mortem.
The suspect has three children from different men. This was her fourth child from another man, according to witness accounts.
Southern Province Spokesperson, Chief Supt Hubert Gashagaza, said the suspect would be charged with infanticide.
“Killing a biological or adopted child is punishable with a life sentence under article 143 of the penal code,” he said.
