Two people, including a woman and her daughter, perished when fire burnt a residential house in Nyamirambo, a Kigali suburb on Thursday.
The ill-fated house was located in Tetero village.
The deceased were identified as Solange Nyirankundabanyanga, 32, and her eight-year old daughter only identified as Ingabire.
Police said the fire that started late evening also injured two other children.
The charred bodies were removed by police from the rubble yesterday and taken to the Kigali University Teaching Hospital (CHUK) mortuary.
“The fire broke out at 9pm on Thursday and our investigations indicate that it was caused by a lit candle. It is a tragic accident,” Urbain Mwiseneza, the central region police spokesperson, told Saturday Times in an interview.
“We advise people to always use an alternative to candles and paraffin lamps, such as solar lamps, if they do not have electricity.”
According to police statistics, fire outbreaks also claimed five people in the last two months in Kigali’s suburbs of Kimironko and Muhima.
