U-20 national football team defender Abdul Rwatubyaye has disappeared from camp in France, according to a statement from Rwanda football federation, Ferwafa.

The team is preparing to compete for the first time in Francophone Games, scheduled for September 6 –15 in Nice, France.

The statement, published on the Ferwafa website, says that the youngster, who plays for Isonga FC, remained in the hotel when his teammates were out for a scheduled stroll and then quietly left the hotel.

“We realized that the boy was missing at around 17h-18h when the team was going for dinner. He left his passport behind which the junior wasps staff gave to (the French) Police to see if they can find him,” the statement reads in part.

No Rwandan player had disappeared during official missions abroad since 2006 when Jean de Dieu Uwimana, on duty with national volleyball, also went AWOL in France.

Back in 2005, right back Jean Remi Bitana also abandoned the senior Amavubi team in Germany.

The Rwandan team is pooled in Group D alongside hosts France, Congo Brazzaville and Canada.

The youngsters will start their quest against Congo Brazzaville on September 6 before taking on Canada two days later and then France on September 10.
