The national league debutants were too strong for rivals APR whom they beat 3-0 in the final of the two-day tournament played on Sunday at Amahoro Indoor Stadium court. “Every player gave everything to achieve this, so am happy to win this tournament. We have done a lot to reach this level; it’s our first season in the top flight league and our first time to compete in the memorial tournament but we have been consistent which is why we have achieved this,” an evidently excited Ntawangundi told Times Sport. He added, “I’m happy with the performance of my team, and I want to congratulate all my players for the effort each one of them has put in to make this dream a reality.” The Ngoma-based side dominated the army side, winning the first set 25-20, the second set 25-23 and the third set 25-23 to win the trophy and Rwf500, 000 in cash prize. APR received Rwf300, 000 and national Youth team, who took third place, walked away with Rwf150, 000. The Qatar-based national team skipper, Christophe Mukunzi, who played a key role in Inatek’s triumph, said that it is a pleasure to win the event. “I am happy to help my team win, but what is most important is that everyone is happy because they have done everything to win this tournament. The whole team has been wonderful throughout the tournament,” he told Times Sport after the game. In the third-place playoff the Youth national team beat Sky of Uganda 3-2 (17-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-20 and 15-9). In semi-finals, the Youth Team lost to Inatek 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 14-25 and 25-19), while APR beat Sky 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-22 and 25-22). The U-19 side eliminated Kigali Volleyball Club 3-2, APR beat rivals National University of Rwanda 3-1, while Sky beat Sport S 3-1, and Inatek overcame Nemo Stars 3-0 in quarter-finals. In the women category, seven-time African champions, Kenya Pipeline Club emerged the winners after beating Rwanda Revenue Authority 3-0 (25-11, 25-22 and 25-11).
