Reports from leading maternity facilities in Kigali City have indicated that most babies born on Christmas day are female. In a mini survey at King Faysal Hospital, Muhima Maternity Hospital and polyclinic la croix de Sud commonly known as  kwa Nyirinkwaya, 29 babies were born on Christmas registering 18 female babies and 11 boys.

King Faysal Hospital registered three female babies, Muhima Maternity Hospital registered the highest number in Kigali with 24 babies 13 of whom female and polyclinic la croix de Sud recorded 2 babies, both females.

“We mostly received mothers who had prenatal complications and most of them gave birth by caesarean. What we seek in  most cases is to save the lives of both parent and baby,” Dr. Jean Nyirinkwaya said in his Nyamirambo office yesterday.

According to Chantal Musanganire coordinator of the weekend team at Muhima government hospital, between 130 and 150 babies are born in a month.

Liziki Mukamazimpaka from Kacyiru, Gasabo District was one of the lucky  mothers at Muhima Hospital who gave birth on Christmas day. She said she was happy.

Oliva Tumukunde from the Eastern Province, in Gatsibo District was still recovering after giving birth by caesarean section at polyclinic la croix de Sud making her the 1200th mother to deliver from the private hospital since the beginning of this year.

“I thank God because I managed to give birth to a baby girl on the 25th even if I had to undergo a caesarean operation,” said Tumukunde who also gave birth to a baby girl.
