Red Cross has trained 70 Rwamagana residents to help those likely to be traumatized during the 15th Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi. Red Cross Rwamagana branch concluded the training which was held at its offices in the district the previous week. Five individuals from each sector that make up the district participated. The chairman of Red Cross Rwamagana branch, Leonard Hakizimfura and a volunteer at the offices, Grace Uwiragiye carried out the training. The trainees were recipients of an induction centered around counselling as well as offering comfort for traumatized persons. Hakizimfura said that during the period of Commemoration survivors tend to suffer from flashbacks of the terrible events of the Genocide and as such many loose sanity over the incidences they witnessed, ending up being traumatized. “The trainees will be close to such people who need to be attended to, with skills that help those affected to calm them down. This training is very critical at this time and the acquired knowledge should be used to its maximum”, he noted. While carrying out a public lecture on Genocide and related crimes, National Electoral Commission (NEC) representative in Rwamagana district, Paul Rwangarinde said that it is the role of every Rwandan to remember the 1994 Genocide.
