Varsity students tipped on internet use

University students have been urged to embrace the internet in their education and research on different areas of their studies. Nicholas Berwa, the Internet Society representative in Rwanda, said the internet plays a leading role in education driving access to information and innovation. Berwa was speaking at an event to mark the 25th anniversary of Internet Society a non-profit organisation founded to provide leadership in Internet-related standards at the University of Rwanda’s Huye Innovation Hub. The Huye Innovation Hub is run by Airtel Rwanda to encourage the use of internet among university students. According to a statement from both organisations, the students were also encouraged to exploit the innovation hub to develop their ideas and take advantage of the ICT infrastructure put in place by government and spearheading the ICT agenda in the country. Berwa said: “We are glad to be celebrating our 25th anniversary at the University of Rwanda. We are not celebrating only milestones but we are here to uplift students by encouraging them to use internet to enhance their experience while they pursue their education.” Airtel Rwanda’s Micheline Umulisa said that the Innovation Hub was put in place to enable students grow their ideas to provide home grown solutions to the country’s challenges. “The internet is one of the most important resources that provide information and communication channels. All the information you need is just a ‘click away’ and the internet, when used well, is capable of changing your life as it enables you to acquire all the knowledge and skills you require.” Students of University of Rwanda College of Arts and Social Sciences in Huye said the Innovation Hub, which was launched by Airtel early this year, has assisted significantly in doing research. “We lacked fast internet to do research for our course works before the Innovation Hub was set up…Now we can freely come to the hub and conduct research using fast internet it provides,” said Vianney Jean Marie, a second year student at the college. “The Innovation Hub is a convenient and comfortable place for one to do course work as the environment is calm with less distractions,” Sandrine Mukesha, a student added.
