Rayon Sports and DR Congo giants AS Vita Club have made winning starts in the inaugural AS Kigali pre-season football tournament which started on Thursday at Kigali Regional Stadium in Nyamirambo.

In the tournament’s opening match, hosts AS Kigalo went down 1-0 against AS Vita. The the lone goal was scored by Oumar Sidibe in the first half.

The Congolese side lead Group A with three points ahead of today’s clash between Rwandan league champions APR FC and Dauphin Noir (DRC), kick off at 3:30pm.

In Group B, Rayon Sports came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over local rivals Police FC to go top of the group with three points.

Eric Ngendahimana gave Police the lead after just 11 minutes but Rwanda international Savio Dominique Nshuti equalized for Djuma Masudi’s side in before the half hour mark with a brilliant free kick passed goalkeeper Marcel Nzarora.

As both sides seemed to be heading for a 1-all draw, Malian new signing Moussa Camara picked the perfect moment to net his first goal for Rayon Sports in the 93rd minute, which arrived after persistent pressure from Masudi’s team.

“This is good start for us because we wanted to win the match and put ourselves in a good position to finish on top of the group,” Masudi said in a post-match interview.

Action continues today when APR FC take on Congolese side Dauphin Noir in Group A at Kigali Regional Stadium and SC Kiyovu face-off Sunrise FC in the late kick off at the same venue, starting at 6pm.

Eastern Province-based side Sunrise FC replaced Congolese side Sanga Balende, who withdrew from the tournament on Wednesday.
