Tell your parents why you prefer the 12-year system

The nine-year-based programme is a vital programme meant to provide basic education to children whose parents can’t afford the high expenses associated with the straight system of the 12-year secondary programme.

Your parents could be evaluating their current financial capacity as being inadequate to cater for your tuition fees plus other scholastic requirements given their current financial stand. Find a conducive approach and place to hold open communication with your parents. This is because it’s hard to come to a career decision together with your parents if your point of view hasn’t been properly voiced.

Your parents aren’t clear on your personal perspective because you’ve never actually defined it for them.

Alternatively all children who completed the nine-year basic cycle from onwards can look forward to continuing their studies to the full secondary cycle of 12 years and beyond. Try and find out exactly why your parents want you to take on the nine year learning programme while discussing the exact details of your own point of view regarding your position about the full secondary cycle of 12 years. Perhaps your parents have no idea regarding the merits of the full 12-year programme.

This is the time when your career aspirations may clash with those of your parents but try not to let emotions affect your conduct and judgment.

Be as calm as possible and use solid instances of what you enjoy doing, and how that relates to your career aspirations. They are much more likely to listen if you’re being mature and reasonable, and you’ll need to listen to their concerns and be prepared to make compromises too in order to balance your passion and parental guidance. Following your passion will make you a completely independent individual capable of determining your own destiny and will keep you aware of your own progress and action needed to improve your learning outcomes.

Furthermore, because it’s your dream which you are working for, so chances of success are high. You need to re-orient your ambitions to succeed and outperform yourself. Visualising success will help you become more confident of yourself and will get you closer to more success.

Parents may be a little disappointed at first but soon they will understand and will be happy if you succeed.

Suggest going to a moderate school of an average standard and tuition fees which can be manageable by your parents. That way,you will be satisfied at-least you have given it your best
