KIGALI - One million women countrywide are tomorrow expected to march as part of the demonstrations to highlight the achievements made in areas of gender and women promotion in the country, The New Times reports

The march comes ahead of a two-day international conference bringing together gender and women rights activists from all over the world to discuss the “Role of Leadership in Promoting Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment”.

According to the Senate vice-president, who is also the President of the Rwanda Women Parliamentarians Forum (FFRP), Marie Mukantabana, the conference will discuss governance, peace, justice and security among other topics.

“One Million Women’s March for a better future’ will see women across the country march to celebrate the advancement of women and to show their support for the continuous commitment in promoting, accelerating and sustaining women’s empowerment and gender equality,” she said.

The conference will discuss and review what has been achieved and the lessons learnt in the areas of governance, peace, justice and security.

It will also review what has been achieved in the area of capacity building in terms of economy, security, gender balance, environment, health and education of women.

The conference coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the 15th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPFA) and the 10th anniversary of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) on Women, Peace and Security.
