Newly elected grassroots leaders in the country have been called upon to maintain the momentum in crime prevention. While meeting the leaders of Gasange Sector, Gatsibo District earlier this week, Roger Rwakayiro, the district community liaison officer (DCLO), urged the newly elected village, cell, youth and women leaders to continue engaging residents to report unlawful cases. He urged them to be close to the people, understand their security challenges and always be quick to share information with police and other security organs for immediate response. “Rwanda National Police conducts frequent anti-crime campaigns and local leaders have been good facilitators of these campaigns; that is why you are reminded to keep up the momentum,” said Rwakayiro. Meanwhile, Police also introduced its anti-malaria campaign to local leaders of Gasange Sector with a demonstration of how to use a mosquito net. Police urged the leaders to teach their residents how to use mosquito nets. “Besides using mosquito nets, you should as well inform residents to always ensure there are no stagnant water pools in their neighborhoods and also cut bushes around their homes,” Rwakayiro said. “An unhealthy population is an insecure one that’s why, in our quest for safety we partner with other stakeholders to address such issues. Our success lies in how we partner with you and the residents.” Dominique Iyakaremye, the executive secretary of Gasange, appealed to the leaders to heed the calls and make them part and parcel of their daily duties. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
