KARONGI – The transport industry in the western province has suffered a major blow after several buses of the government owned Transport Company, Onatracom were impounded by police last week.

Most of the impounded buses ply the Karongi-Rubavu and Karongi-Rusizi routes while some others make trips to Kigali.

According to police, the buses either lack proper identification documents or clearance by auto clinics (controle technique). Some drivers are also said to lack valid driving licenses.

“It is within our jurisdiction to ensure security of passengers most especially during the week in which police is commemorating its 10th anniversary,” Police said.

It emerged that some of the drivers used temporary police statements allowing them to drive over specified time frames some of which are dated as far back as last year.

Speaking to The New Times, an official from Onatracom said they were preparing to acquire all the necessary documents in order for their buses to hit the road again.
