Pyrethrum farmers in the country are now earning more money from selling their crop directly to a processor. The farmers who used to earn Frw600 currently get Frw1,000 per kilogramme.

The increase of farmgate  prices is partly attributed to the high prices of pyrethrum and its products on the international markets. But largely to adding value to the pyrethrum products.

According to the internet, pyrethrum is the active ingredient in most ready-to-use household and houseplant insecticides. When refined, pyrethrum extract exported to USA, Britain and Japan sells at $150 (about Frw80,000).

Paul Muvunyi, a proprietor of SOPRWA, a pyrethrum processing company (SOPRWA) in Musanze District in Northern Province says he is paying more to farmers because he is also earning.

“After completion of our factory, we decided to increase the price we pay pyrethrum producers.”

The proprietor said that the factory is among 3 best pyrethrum processing plants in the world and therefore its products are on high demand.
