Editor, RE: “Pass English or repeat: How best can universities deal with proficiency tests?” (The New Times, August 19). I have always advised my students to try using English since one can learn from wherever they are, and not only during the presence of a lecturer/teacher; i.e. if one is proficient in a language, in this case English, you can read any book/text on your own and understand. You can even conduct research. This will reduce the current practice of over-dependency on a teacher. How can we implement the modern educational policy of learner/student centered teaching if the students continue over-depending on lecturers? Clearly, English proficiency is necessary.
