Bad weather caused Lake Kivu boat accident

KARONGI – A recent boat accident on Lake Kivu was caused by bad weather. This was revealed through a report written after a investigations that was carried out and which was released this week.

“It has finally been established that bad weather was the major cause of the tragedy but it does not mean that the incident should completely be treated as an accident. Some people have to answer a few questions,” Police spokesperson Supt Eric Kayiranga said yesterday.

He emphasized that Protais Munyeshaka, the coxswain of the ill-fated boat who is currently on the run is still wanted.

“The coxswain of the boat is still wanted because we need to have him answer some questions related to the accident,” Kayiranga said.

The boat from Rutsiro district ferrying mourners aboard was headed to Nyamunini Island to commemorate genocide victims who were murdered and thrown in Lake Kivu.

Over 20 people including five policemen and three top district officials died in the accident. A monument is being set up in their memory.
