MUHANGA – Over ten people were seriously injured after a taxi omnibus they were traveling in swayed off the road at Kabgayi Petrol station in Nyamabuye sector on Monday night, Police has confirmed.

“The accident was caused after the two taxis unsuccessfully tried to overtake a FUSO truck. In order to avoid a head on collision with an oncoming vehicle one of the taxis swerved off the road”, Eric Mwizerwa, an eye witness said.

“The other taxi also knocked two people on a motorbike and one pedestrian.”

The vehicles were coming from Ruhango and heading to Kigali at around 8pm.

Residents helped to rescue the injured victims and rushed them to Kabgayi Hospital.

Most of the victims suffered fractured bones, deep cuts while some were rendered unconscious. They were being treated from the hospital’s intensive care unit, according to medics.

Doctors said the driver of one of the taxis, Alex Hategikimana, was drunk upon being tested.

The mishap happens just after a similar one in Musambira sector on March 19 involving an Onatracom bus where over 50 passengers were seriously injured.
