NYANZA – The local authorities in Nyanza district have pledged to take serious measures against the rampant cattle theft in the district.

During the general security meeting that was held in Mukingo sector on Tuesday, reports from 10 Sectors of the district revealed that cattle theft has been rampant in Mukindo and Busoro Sectors -which border with the neighboring Burundi.

Security organ’s reports revealed that most of stolen cows are sold in different local markets while others are taken to Burundi.

“Seven cows have been stolen in Mukingo Sector since the beginning of this year. Most of them are stolen during night because people are not complying with the policy of keeping their cattle in kraals,” said Paulin Mutabaruka, the Executive Secretary of Mukingo sector.

The district Mayor, Abdallah Murenzi, said there is need for security organs especially community policing agents to invest more efforts and create strategies to deal with the problem.

“Night patrols must be enforced in order to curb this problem. But also those who are in charge of night patrols must be held responsible for any reported security breach,” said the Mayor.
