KARONGI – There is a shortage of transport means within Karongi district and the nearby towns after Police impounded several motorcycles last week.

A total of 27 motorcycles were seized because operators only possessed provisional driving licenses, which is against the country’s traffic rules.

Most traders have failed to transport items from villages to market centres and it is even harder to move from one place to another within the town, with many traders complaining that their income has been affected.

“This has caused difficultly in our efforts to earn a living because our source of income has been jeopardized,” Isidore Iyakaramye, one of the traders in Kibuye market said.

However, Police insisted that it will keep hold of the motorcycles until their owners acquire permits.

“If you do not possess a proper driving license you are not allowed to ride or drive on a public road. A provisional license only allows you to train,” Police said.
