KARONGI – Following criticism from top government officials and the local population, two of the major genocide memorial sites in Karongi district are set to be renovated, an official confirmed.

The two sites are  the Bwishyura memorial site and Bisesero Memorial Centre which was abandoned by a building contractor in 2003.

Prime Minister Bernard Makuza last week was the latest official to criticize the local leaders for failing to improve the district’s infrastructure especially memorial sites.

Speaking to The New Times yesterday, Bernard Kayumba, the district Mayor, said apart from the renovations, regular cleaning of the sites will commence.

“More than Rwf85million has been put aside to initiate the project of renovating memorial sites. The National Commission to fight against Genocide (CNLG) is in the  final stages of negotiating with a new contractor,” Kayumba said yesterday.

Most residents who talked to The New Times insist that the sorry state of the memorial sites does not reflect the honour and respect that innocent victims of genocide deserve.
