The Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Prof. Chrysologue Karangwa, has asked election officers to immediately start executing their duties and not wait until elections are about to begin.

Karangwa made the remarks yesterday while addressing seventy district civic education and election officers from different provinces in the country, who gathered for a two day sensitization workshop at Hilltop Hotel.

“We need to understand our obligations and how we can execute them together before sensitizing the population about the elections.

It is not proper for us to wait for June or July, we should be mapping the polling stations now,” Karangwa said.

He told the officers that while there will be need for volunteers during the election period, it is equally important that they are trained on the code of conduct, in the coordination of elections.

Karangwa underscored the need to intensify communication strategies, saying that many Rwandans still need to know more about the August presidential polls.

The NEC Executive Secretary, Charles Munyaneza, said about 70,000 volunteers will be needed to help in the election period.
