MUHANGA – Over 34 housemaids in Nyamabuye sector, Muhanga district have appealed to employers to recognise their rights.
The maids made the appeal during a human rights training held at the Muhanga cultural centre recently.
The housemaids said they were being abused, harassed by housewives, they lack health insurance and are paid meagre wages.
“We are not appreciated or valued, despite the fact that we handle a large portion of family chores. We need to be recognised like other employees who are protected by labour laws,” one participant said.
Jean Baptiste Mugunga, the Executive Secretary of Nyamabuye sector promised to work with other rights organisations to address their concerns.
The training was sponsored by sector officials in conjunction with a local association CYESHURUGO and facilitated by Haguruka - a human rights local Non Governmental Organisation.
