Illegal stone crashers arrested in Rusizi

RUSIZI - Three people alleged to have been illegally crashing stones in a quarry in Mururu sector, Rusizi district and selling them to the Democratic Republic of Congo were arrested last weekend, Police said. The Rusizi District Police Commander, Supt Johnson Sesonga said the suspects, including a woman, are currently detained at the Kamembe Police station.

RUSIZI - Three people alleged to have been illegally crashing stones in a quarry in Mururu sector, Rusizi district and selling them to the Democratic Republic of Congo were arrested last weekend, Police said. 

The Rusizi District Police Commander, Supt Johnson Sesonga said the suspects, including a woman, are currently detained at the Kamembe Police station.

“We arrested them after getting a tip-off from one of our informers in the area. The suspects were caught red-handed while crashing stones on the shores of Lake Kivu in Tare cell,” Supt Sesonga said.

The suspects have been selling the stones to Congolese buyers in Bukavu town, who used them in house and road construction. This according to the police boss.   

The illegal dealers allegedly transported the stones to Bukavu by boat at night. 

Speaking from the Police post, Idelphonse Habimana, one of the suspects said, “Yes it’s true we were arrested while crashing stones in Mururu. I have been in this business for over two years.” 

DPC Sesonga added that  security personnel have been deployed around the shores of Lake Kivu to prevent further illegal activity.
