EVEN without adequate preparations, Rwandan pugilists showed that they are a class apart after dominating Sunday’s friendly meet with DRC at Amahoro Indoor Stadium.

Rwanda collected15 points in five bouts while DRC could only master three points thanks to Alex Kabungulu, who beat Epa Mbarushimana in the flyweight category (51kg).

In the light flyweight category (48kg), Rwanda’s future prospect Aziz Matusi downed Akili Mali to raise his confidence ahead of April’s World Youth Championship in Azerbaijan.

In Bantumweight (54kg), Hategeka Sibomana edged Christian Bubala; David Nsabimana beat Kamundala in featherweight (57Kg), Michel Gashumba saw off Shamamba in light welterweight (60Kg) while the welterweight contest between Maurice Bikorimana and Akonkwa Mungu was ruled a no fight.

The highlight of the day however came in middle weight (75kg) when Vincent Nsengiyumva knocked out Kizito Ruhamya in the first round.

“It’s my first career knock out and I’m thrilled that it came in the first round. I hope to achieve more in future tournaments,” the excited boxer told Times Sport.

The one-day event was jointly sponsored by Hotel Tech, PMU-Rwanda and Ministry of Sports and Culture (Minispoc).
