RWAMAGANA — A 55-year-old woman of Rwamagana district, Mariya Mukankusi, who was shot and seriously injured by gunmen at her home, last Sunday, has regained consciousness.
Mukankusi, admitted at Rwamagana Hospital, was attacked by gunmen at her home in Kivumu village, Gishari sector.
Speaking from her hospital bed, Mukankusi recalled that two men entered their house at around 8.30 pm, camouflaged in heavy clothes and demanded to see her husband Everest Gatete.
One of the two men, she narrated, tried to force his way to the bed room, where the husband was sleeping but she blocked his way.
“I wrestled with the stranger and when he realised I was almost over powering him, he pulled out a gun and shot me. I fell down unconsciously, and I can’t tell what followed later,” she said.
Gatete, the husband, who allegedly hid in the ceiling, says about 12 bullets were shot and he was surprised to hear that his wife is still alive.
“I heard the scuffle in the seating room and voices of some strangers I had had few minutes ago, outside the bedroom window,” he said. “I knew they were looking for me. I crawled up in the ceiling.”
He added that he believes the attackers were envious of his seemingly stable financial status.
Police confirmed the attack yesterday, saying several suspects have been arrested and detained at Rwamagana Police station, pending further investigations.
