KARONGI – Members of Parliament have intervened to in an effort to solve a land dispute between Karongi district and about 70 residents of Bwishyura sector.

The residents say in 1982, they were evicted in order to pave way for the construction of Ecole Technique (ETO) de Kibuye, but expressed frustration at the time it has taken for them to be compensated.

However, Saiba Gashanana, the Executive Secretary of Bwishyura sector, says all the people who owned houses were paid although there are no documented records to show how much they were paid.

Three Members of Parliament who met the affected residents said they wanted to get their views and see how to help them.

“We intend to get your views and the position of the district leadership in order to amicably solve this problem that has dragged on for a very long time,” Francois Byabarumwanzi, one of the MPs told the residents.

It is not yet clear whether it is Karongi district or the Ministry of Education that will compensate the residents.
