Police yesterday destroyed illicit drugs and liquors worth millions of francs at Nyanza compost site in Kicukiro District.

The destroyed items that included marijuana and Kanyanga (crude gin) were confiscated in a police operation in conjunction with district authorities.

During the two-week operation, three people suspected of selling marijuana were also arrested and have since been produced in court.

Also among items destroyed was a large assortment of polythene materials.

Speaking at the site, the Mayor of Kicukiro District, Jules Ndamage, warned residents against littering and use of polythene bags.

“Everyone knows that polythene bags are banned in Rwanda. As for those who throw empty bottles wherever they want, fines have been put in place and they should stand warned,” Ndamage said.

In a recent Advisory Council meeting for Kigali city, it was agreed that whoever is caught dumping bottles on streets or road sides will be fined between Rwf 50,000 and Rwf 100,000.

“We believe this will stop those who have a habit of dumping these bottles wherever they want,” Ndamage said.
