MUHANGA - Police in Nyamabuye sector are holding a pastor of the Methodist Liberal Church in Muhanga, Assiel Ngwije, for allegedly uttering genocide ideology remarks.
Pastor Ngwije was arrested on January 16. He is accused of telling Damascene Tuyizere, a Senior 5 student at Lycee de Nyanza, that genocide survivors have become ‘idlers.’
Tuyizere, a Compassion International beneficiary, was at the church to seek support when the accused pastor uttered the remarks.
Tuyizere said, “There has never been such a confrontation before and I was hurt by the words and my feelings as a genocide survivor.”
According to witnesses at the church, the man of God confessed to making the remarks arguing that he is after all also a genocide survivor.
Police sources indicate that an investigation has been launched to enable prosecution charge the suspect.
The government has continued to fight genocide ideology in the southern province and some residents have been puzzled by the fact that a genocide survivor can insult another one in such a manner.
