NGO Committed to eradicate soil erosion

GICUMBI – AVSI, a local NGO is engaged in environment protection through planting of Bamboo trees in Rukomo, Nyamiyaga and Ruvune Sectors of Gicumbi District.So far a total of 1000 bamboo trees has been  planted on 3.5 hectares of land by residents of Gahumuliza Cell in Nyamiyaga Sector. “The residents engaged in bamboo tree planting comprise area Agriculture and Livestock farmers whom AVSI trained on the importance of planting bamboo trees to eradicate soil erosion”, said AVSI field supervisor Bonne- Idée Gakire.

AVSI field officers further said their NGO is committed to protecting water sources by digging trenches and planting trees along the swamps.

“Water is needed to boost Agriculture production and support livestock farming, which is why residents have to plant trees along the water source and on the edge of the swamp”, added Gakire.

About 100 residents turned up for the bamboo tree planting campaign at Nyamiyaga and Rukomo Sectors this Monday.
