GATSIBO – Youth in Rwagitima sector, Gatsibo district have committed to embrace voter registration so as to massively participate in the next year’s presidential elections.

“We shall register and vote maturely for a candidate of our choice. The awareness we have so far, is enough to enable us choose the right candidate,” Janvier Habimana, one of the youth said.

“If we don’t vote, we shall be denying ourselves our right.”

They were speaking at a sensitisation campaign organised by the National Electoral Commission (NEC).

Frank R. Kayiranga, the NEC representative in Eastern Province, called on all eligible persons to register in order to participate in the elections.

Also speaking at the same event was the NEC representative in Gatsibo district, Christopher Bugire, who warned youth against any sort of indiscipline during the elections.

“It is true that you know your rights, but I don’t want to see any of you engaged in nasty incidences during or after casting your votes,” he said.

The Sector Executive Secretary, John Mushumba, noted that Rwagitima has a good record in elections.

“People of age in the sector participate in the elections 100 per cent. Records have it that they cast their votes very early in the morning, and by mid-day every one calls it a day,” he said.

NEC distributed booklets highlighting election guidelines.

“These booklets are important since one can read them over time, as he or she internalises information contained in them. You may forget what you hear, but not what you read daily,” one resident said.
