I was appalled by the recent arrest of a National Bank director who is allegedly involved in a scam of trying to bribe a Gacaca court president.
The mere fact that this is an educated man, fully aware of what he is doing is enough to aggravate the matter and on top of this; he is a director in one of the most important institutions in the country.
Jean Damascene Nkurunziza is also the husband to a former minister in the government of national unity. Sincerely, we expect such a person to not only desist from such acts of corruption but also to be a role model in their respective societies.
Trying to bribe an officer (definitely of a lesser education status) is very unfortunate. It is evident from the article I read in The New Times that this man has already pleaded guilty to trying to bribe the Gacaca official to facilitate the release of his brother, so we are not speculating here.
He should go ahead and tell us why in the first place he wanted his brother released before standing trial because there could be something fishy he feared would have unfolded during the course of the trial.
Allow me to also use this forum to extend my gratitude to the Gacaca official, Antoine Mupende, for standing his ground and tipping off the police to apprehend Nkurunziza. He should be a lesson to all others who might be led into the bait of such unpatriotic people.
