MUSANZE – Residents from five cells in Musanze sector staged plays and drama competitions with messages promoting proper hygiene and sanitation in homes. Rwambogo cell emerged the winner and was awarded a television set and decoder, which shall be used to show films about good hygiene practices.
The competitions were organised by Community Based Water and Sanitation project-CWASA.
According to Joyeuse Noella Urwibutso, the coordinator of CWASA, drama was used because it leaves a lasting impact. Local leaders say residents within areas surrounding the volcanic areas of Virunga face serious sanitation challenges because of water shortages.
They also said it is difficult to build pit latrines because of the rocky terrain.
Pascal Butunge, the district vice mayor, said there is need to sensitise residents on the effects of poor hygiene in order to prevent diseases.
CWASA project works targets the two sectors of Gashaki and Musanze. Over 70 families now have locally installed equipment for hand washing locally known as kandagira ukarabe.
